I'm not sure Aral understands DuckDuckGo is not exactly a browser (they have "DuckDuckGo App" for Android only and it comes with several non-browser things), that Apple was named as one of the biggest contributors to the surveillance state in the Snowden revelations, and that Mozilla doesn't get paid "hundreds of millions" from Google.
I should double check, but most of this (if not all of it) seems counterfactual at best, and it looks like misdirected animosity.

Another good feature about Mastodon is the lack of "Trending Topics".

It's a good thing that decentralisation makes it hard to mine and aggregate such data.

It won't be cheap and it won't be easy, but people who seize the means of computation will succeed. Information doesn't have volition and it can't reflect about itself, but it does disperse in ways similar to a fluid. Information that humans store outside their brains is the cultural backup of our minds. I'm tempted to say it's a law of nature that we'll eventually see a million futures exploding in a million different directions. We're approaching critical mass at an accelerated rate.

@decoy Try PeerTube yourself. It's not a toy, it actually works and it takes less effort than using Youtube. I was really impressed.
