If I manually modprobe the visor driver, it does appear to recognize that the palm is on ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1, but then when I press the hotsync button I get an error in dmesg that says

    "usb 1-2: palm_os_4_probe - error -110 getting connection info"

    which seems like a problem.

I'm going to try to reboot, and then try pilot-xfer instead of jpilot.

Yeah, this is probably a modern Ubuntu and derivatives problem, or I'm missing something critical that I am failing to understand.

If I had an SD card reader with me, I'd just use that, but I only have a microSD card reader with me.

Turns out that I grabbed the lifedrive I haven't refurbished instead of the one I have, so I'm not super concerned about getting it to work RIGHT NOW anyway, since I want to get it to work with my other lifedrive.

This is one of those bits that I do once when I get a new computer and basically never have to think about again, you know?

And so I never remember how to do it.

And frankly, it changes between OS versions so much that I'm not convinced that I had to do anything other than USB: in jpilot the past.

K, jpilot doesn't work and I don't know why, but pilot-xfer works if and only if I 1) press the hotsync button 2) check which USBTTY the palm pilot has connected to, 3) then start pilot-xfer.

If I start pilot-xfer and then press the hotsync button, it jumps to a different USBTTY?

Regardless, I now have the keyboard driver installed (on the wrong Lifedrive) and I can verify that it works.

Alright. I'm gonna do some ridiculous stuff today.

One of the ridiculous things I'm going to do is to get some programs I wrote in commodore BASIC as a child (and which I only have today as *screenshots* of the program listing from an emulator) to run on modern linux.

I could port them from BASIC to a modern language, I could install an emulator for the commodore.

I think what I'm going to do, though, is install a BASIC compiler.

    I'm specifically looking at QB64.

    (Small thread?)

Doing real programming at work has made me want to work on personal programming projects that I've abandoned or ignored because I'm a weak engineer.

(I should explain! I have a hard time holding a language's syntax in my head, even if I'm using it every day, I use it with a reference manual open! I dunno why I'm like that. The upshot is that I code very slowly, but I edit pretty quickly.

I can help other folks figure out what's wrong with their code better than I can write mine.)

I've been doing a lot more real programming than normal at work. I've started learning Go, and I've been writing a fair amount of Python and editing some node.

This is fine. That's my job.

    But uhh.

Damn, I guess this is going to be a longer thread because I'm already hitting character limits.

Dude made thinkpads with pixel Qi displaya: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuegrU_kIq8

I'm glad they sold out before I saw one, so now I'll have to build one instead of buying it.

I wish the company that owned the pixel qi display tech (they're only like half an hour from me) would return my emails.

I guess I need to call them.

I've written about this before: http://ajroach42.com/shada-douglas-adams-unfinished-doctor-who-arc-reborn-in-countless-works-of-fan-fiction/

I may update that post to note that it's been officially released now.

For those who are unfamiliar, this is Douglas Adams famously unfinished doctor who episode.

Seeing as it was unlikely to ever be released, Adams recycled the plot in to his novel Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency, replacing the doctor with the titular gently (and effectively making Dirk gently doctor who fan fic)

Then it was rereleased as a radio episode and a flash animation, and a fan novel, and a recut fanedit, and a VHS with linking narration, and an official novel, and now this.

In so much (cyberpunk?) media from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the hero is a journalist.

Journalism, was seen as the ultimate tool against despots.

(Think Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future, or Transmetropolitan, Makers (and many of the rest of Doctorow's books) or even Futureworld.)

And VCs + Facebook have effectively crippled modern journalism. Destroyed most local journalism. Rendered the pursuit of truth an optional side project for the left, and incompatible with the right.
