@ekaitz_zarraga gdb is great. I think debugger is a bit like repls and help to understand what's going on in the code, how compiler understands stuff. Tooling of C is quite hard too, maybe even harder than C itself.

There is a language that as minimal as C, but with a lot of fixed issues of c. The name of that language is Oberon and it was developed by Wirth. Sadly it is not popular at all in unix-like systems, compilers are not even packaged anywhere.

@ekaitz_zarraga I dunno, C is so damn simple, so when I look to glibc I can't understand anything because it has tons of macros. Maybe I have a bad expression only because I was looking at gnu code, I've seen several a critique several times how complex gnu software is compared to lets say openbsd. Also C feels clumsy after learning lisps, because it lacks REPL and runtime self modifying and self inspecting abilities.

@ekaitz_zarraga I can program in anything except C. How to learn it, its tooling and stop experiencing suffering from bad macros, header file, pointers and lack of module system :(

I wish to learn it to understand gnu software better. Maybe I could contribute to emacs with c knowledge.

@ekaitz_zarraga I don't think that guile is a silver bullet especially for something complex as gui app. But it would be nice if there was a good support for gui programming in guile. I think scheme to tk toolkit should be the easiest one to port.

@ekaitz_zarraga If you are fine to use gtk, I think racket is a good choice for GUI.

But now we have found maintained open source game engine called Panda3D and Ursina. Ursina extends Panda3D adding higher level abstractions on top. They use C++ for base engine and Python for scripting. Python itself provides much more abstractions than Blitz Basic does and it also has much more choice in terms of libraries.

I'm not into gamedev, but I'm gonna try to help him with python programming, because Python as a language looks quite different compared to C-like languages and Basic.

My friend was using proprietary Blitz3D engine for his gamedev tasks. It uses Basic and doesn't have many of useful abstractions (for example it doesn't have OOP). It also works only on Windows. To be honest it is not proprietary, but its devs decided to open source it like companies do, when they have wasted project, that they don't need anymore.

If you know other easy 3D game engines, that doesn't have workflow of doing everything in one ultimate editor (like Unity and Godot3D which has editor and 3D view in a same program), please share.

Squeak Smalltalk looks great. Quite easy to learn actually, I hope it will help with small experiments involving GUI programming, because using C libraries for that like gtk sucks too much.

Decided to buy this keyboard for my desktop work setup. Using a mouse is so annoying.

@ekaitz_zarraga @civodul I double, guix is the best libre distribution available and compared to others distros it is also unique. Thanks for your great work. Hopefully I could contribute back some day.

@ekaitz_zarraga I feel the same, I've got a job with not high load, so I can spend time a bit more freely, but yet it feels depressing how bad that software designed and I feel like I do pointless stuff at work. Even little load cause me stress, if I do something I don't like. It is very hard to find a field what would bring you pleasure to work and at the same time would bring society some benefits.

Smalltalk environments have a lot in common with lisp way of development. I wish more languages be less static, nowadays even dynamic languages are not that interactive as smalltalk or lisp.

Smalltalk has repl and it is image based like lisp.

    Another mass-shooting in russian school.

    https://washingtonpost.com/world/9-people-killed-in-a-school-shooting-in-russia---reports/2021/05/11/97d75026-b22f-11eb-bc96-fdf55de43bef_story.html

Russian education is a really depressed place if you are a kid. When I was a student at school two children was stabbed with a knife, one of them had died, another one had survived and the guy was my classmate (happened outside of school at age 14-15 y.). When I was at colleage one of the students was killed inside education building in a classroom. I live in Moscow, so even here that shit happens a lot and noone cares.

@ekaitz_zarraga Is it a webpack issue? Javascript tooling is the worst tbh, most of the complexity lies there.
