A big thank you to those of you who popped onto that Owncast instance and helped me test.

A couple of takeaways from a two-minute test:

- We had ~20 folks max, buttery smooth platback - On Firefox, Privacy Badger apparently interferes with playback for some reason. (CC @gabek)

I wish GNOME Web (Epiphany) would block trackers instead of ads (which would also block ads but actually protect people from tracking too). People pay for Better on iOS/macOS to protect them (in an ideal world they shouldn’t have to but our tiny independent two-person not-for-profit needs to survive somehow… not that it’s enough so please donate if you can https://small-tech.org/fund-us) but it’s free/open and GNOME could protect you from trackers by default by including it.

Wow, just had a DNS provider tell me that they cannot supply our tiny two-person not-for-profit with a Data Processing Agreement unless we upgrade from the €6/mo plan we’re on to a €300/mo plan.

Basically I’m using them to set up subdomains on one domain as part of what we’re building for small-web.org.

I don’t even know how that’s legal.

To contrast, with Hetzner for the VPS hosting it was a couple of clicks and with Stripe, it was one click to get it set up.

@ekaitz_zarraga @snikket_im It’s a horrible thing to have even a part of your livelihood tied to the whims of a faceless multi-trillion dollar corporation. They can destroy you without thinking (or even noticing, not even any malice required). I wouldn’t wish it on my enemy :)

@ekaitz_zarraga @snikket_im Indeed, not taking a dump on what Snikket are doing at all (I boosted their status here and, via the automatic forward, on the hellsite). More power to them. I was just talking about my personal opinion.

Apple have left us in limbo for over a year and won’t help us move our account from the old org to the new one so we cannot release updates, etc., and I’ve about had it with them.

@ekaitz_zarraga @snikket_im Thanks, Ekaitz, but I don’t see myself doing any future work on Apple’s platforms unless it is to create a native client for a small web site at some point… which isn’t really necessary. Basically, I look forward to the day that we don’t need to ask Apple’s permission for anything or rely on them to any degree to be able to pay the rent.

I just saw someone refer to themselves as a “Musketeer” and I believe I might have just lost my last shred of hope in humanity.

Remember that for every well-to-do asshole who benefited financially from injustice only to express remorse years after the fact, there were people who were demonised and shunned for not going along with it and speaking out against it in the first place…
