From Jan 31st Docker Desktop for Windows/Mac will need a $5/mo subscription if you work for an org with >250 employees.

I'm all for paying for software that makes my life easier, but I've been checking out the alternatives and some seem really nice!

I wrote up my full experimentation with these Docker Desktop for Mac alternatives on my blog.

Are you switching? Have I missed anything? What is your preferred option?

The last option I tried was a new one to me called Colima. It is based on Lima which aims to provide WSL like functionality on Mac using a Linux VM and clever filesystem/network mappings. Colima then layers Docker on top of that. It seemed pretty slick!

I also hear people rave about Podman as the new Docker. It behaves almost identically to Docker but is a separate implementation maintained by RedHat. It doesn't need root, is deamonless and can manage its own transparent VM on Mac. Sounds good to me!

I've heard folks suggest that Minikube can be a good alternative because it installs Kubernetes in a VM for you and you can also access the Docker service that it runs in its VM. Although it seems you have to jump through a few hoops.

Docker Desktop transparently runs a Linux VM and maps things like your filesystem and network ports over. It also has a GUI if you're into that.

I like Docker Desktop because Docker on my MacBook feels just like Docker on Linux.
