Wow. A phone that feels like a true work of love and care.
At a hefty price.

@xerz I made some research about this not long ago. Phones are not really complex devices from a block-diagram perspective. They just need to integrate the 4G/5G or whatever module in the best way possible, also those are hard to find in spare parts.
Any raspberry pi can drive a simple 4G module via UART with very simple software... But of course we need to lower our expectations from a smartphone.
Expectations that have always been an illusion, imho.
basically, like a RasPi but DIY phone. That could be neat! :blobcatsip:
which makes me think
I hope the Pinephone platform matures to a point where everyone can put the motherboard into whatever case they want and, tada, custom phone
@ekaitz_zarraga tbh the industry trend in all fields is to make everything into SoCs/SiPs, so… hmm I wonder why wouldn’t you try to go that way with the modem
@xerz they already are, that's what I was talking about. A 4G modem is a really complex SoC.
@xerz they'll come in the future. They probably will be very complex and proprietary.
@ekaitz_zarraga I mean, why keep it in a separate die/chip from the CPU
