Unfortunately, Firefox is the best browser you’re going to get under capitalism/Silicon Valley.

Thankfully, we can do so much better than capitalism/Silicon Valley.

If we want a browser owned and controlled by the people, we must fund an organisation owned and controlled by the people to build and maintain it. (So, for example, an independent org funded by our taxes.)

And, hey, they don’t even have to start from scratch. They can, for example, fork Firefox. ;)

@TrechNex @aral Librewolf, Icecat, and others, yeah. But I don't think they really have the resources for developing / maintaining it properly

@aral isn't that what LibreWolf have done?

I've not had chance to try it myself, but if my own experience is any indication they're going to need contributors and some momentum behind them. 🙂

@ekaitz_zarraga @aral yeah, I noticed when I read the LibreWolf website after posting that. :\

Realistically for a fork to succeed long term it has to be taken under the auspices of a larger organisation, which I think Aral also mentioned.

If you fail to do that, then maintaining contributor interest becomes a struggle and external events outside of your control can kill the fork off prematurely.

Perhaps GNOME Web might be the dark horse solution? Most obvious issue atm is that it hasn't been ported to Windows or macOS.

@TrechNex @aral GNOME Web uses an external engine. The core part of the browser is the engine, that's what we should maintain ourselves too... IDK
