Sidenote: I have enormous sympathy for F1000’s experiments with #openpeerreview, but there REALLY needs to be a human editor in the loop. It took almost 2 years to find 2 reviewers for this paper, despite me inputting dozens of names into the system, because system automatically rejected several people (could not find their publications, sometimes really bizarre given seniority, or there was evidence of some collaboration with one of our 12 authors, which automatically rules them out). .. as an editor myself, I know that to approach reviewers is to ask a giant favour for no reward, and a personal touch & appreciation is important. Sending bot-produced anonymous emails is unlikely to convinced anybody to lend their precious time, especially when review needs to be framed as a public document. #openpeerreview may make review more accountable, but it can’t work in a competitive system where reviewers are unrecognised volunteers. And recording reviews on Publons is not enough..
