@ekaitz_zarraga@mntmn I have a list of requirements for my perfect music player that is like four pages long. I even looked into designing and building it myself for a bit, but audio is scary and I know very little about it from the electronics side of it.
@mntmn@ekaitz_zarraga I agree with Ekaitz here, just basic mp3 and trrs is fine, my requirements pertain more to the size, connectors and user interface: small, built-in usb-c so no cables needed, display optional, tactile buttons that let you use it without seeing the screen, basically just volume, next song, and next directory (could even use the buttons that are built into the smartphone headphones these days).
it plays anything you want from an sd card, has high quality output that can drive your fanciest headphones (or bluetooth earbuds), and should have a wonderfully long battery life
Alas my many Rockbox players (and recorders!) slowly start dying.
My favorite Rockbox players are the Iriver H120 and the Ipod Nano 2Gen 8GB. The Iriver because it has analog & digital input/output and can reliably record bit perfectly for days. The iriver's has a easy to replace battery and you can swap the drive for an adaptor. I use a 64GB compact flash one in mine...
will make noise and start throwing the repos at people... Eventually. there will definitely be a long tail of firmware nice-to-haves that i'll need a hand with
@ekaitz_zarraga@mntmn@deshipu we were thinking of porting rockbox to use as firmware! but for various reasons we've ended up just doing our own heavily-inspired-by-rockbox thing
