    @garbados Profit is not inherently bad. Once we redefine the success we can start thinking on profit from a different perspective.

    For me profit is just getting enough for living, it's not a really capitalist perspective.
    That said, my company https://elenq.tech is trying to make free and ethical software and get some profit from it.

    The idea is to demonstrate it's possible to live making ethical technology of any kind and show a PoC of a possible way to do it.

      @garbados Indeed, all this must start from the point where the company is not meant to grow in a capitalistic way so it's not a Startup. It's more like your neighborhood's fruit store.

      It's not looking for an exponential growth or anything. But it's giving me enough for my living and probably in the future it's going to bit me a little bit more to have some savings.

      @garbados looking to your thread I mostly agree with all you say but I have some interesting thoughts to enrich the discussion.

      > Profit makes software bad

      Does profit make art bad?
      Depends.

      There is a red line (a blurred one, tbh): Selling your soul.
      If you sell your soul you make horrible software/art/whatever.
      If you don't, you can stay ethical. But you have to be creative to get profit.

      @garbados
      You are also tackling this from the perspective of services for tons of users, like looking for a replacement for widely spread software stuff.

      That case is one of the worse. My company makes R&D, which means companies come and tell me to solve their problems. I solve them with ethical software and earn money from that.

      I'm like an artisan of the software. I earn money from the code I write, not for the amount of users using it.

      I don't care to share it as free sw afterwards.
