Me: it’s time to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Detractor: well, count me out as long as your approach is to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Well, yes, exactly, that’s the idea.

Thanks to Platinum Sponsors Google and Facebook, Shoshana Zuboff (who helped popularise the term surveillance capitalism) is launching her new book, ‘The Age of Surveillance Capitalism’ in Europe this evening at the Data Protection and Democracy conference in Brussels.
Dear Shoshana, can you name two of the largest surveillance capitalists in the world so we know who to protect ourselves from?
#SurveillanceCapitalism #whitewashing #InstitutionalCorruption
“I'm not interested in punishing people for using any particular provider. If Geary nags people for using Gmail or whatever the evil company of the month is, then people will just stop using Geary.”

“When you’re neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” – Desmond Tutu
The services of surveillance capitalists, if included at all in ethical technology, should come with tobacco-style warnings.
Gotta love free and open source folks who care so much about privacy and freedom and who love Google so damn much and can’t get enough of Google and oh my goodness do you think one day if I’m ever so good I will get to maybe work at Google?
So Mark and I both wrote opinion pieces on ZEIT ONLINE but we seem to disagree…?
Mark’s (in English): https://www.zeit.de/digital/datenschutz/2019-01/social-media-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-ads-privacy-business-model-transparency

“How many ad blocks could an ad slinger block if an ad slinger could block blocks?
Google engineers have proposed changes to the open-source Chromium browser that will break content-blocking extensions, including various ad blockers … Adblock Plus will most likely not be affected”

PS. Guess who gets millions from Google not to block Google?
Hint: A_block _lus.

Think about how many times in a day on the Web you click “I agree” when you really don’t agree just so you can get on with your day and use an everyday thing.
This is not how consent is supposed to work.
Q. What should I use to protect myself from surveillance on a Chromebook?
A. A hammer.
World: Google, you are so smart, impartial, and benevolent, please write all our protocols and standards.
Google: Oh yeah, btw, we don’t think you should be able to protect yourself from being tracked on our browser.
Google to break uBlock Origin on Chromium.

Google Is Fined $57 Million Under Europe’s Data Privacy Law
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/21/technology/google-europe-gdpr-fine.html
“the French data protection authority announced Monday that it had fined Google 50 million euros, or about $57 million, for not properly disclosing to users how data is collected across its services — including its search engine, Google Maps and YouTube — to present personalized advertisements.”

@mmn @colegota “When they get PR out of it” negates the “without giving anything back.” What you’re giving back by legitimising them is the thing they need the most. The only thing that will limit Google is regulation. They know this. Eric Schmidt once told me “I wake up every morning and I fight regulation. It’s my job. It’s what I do.” We cannot regulate effectively as long as they remain socially acceptable.
Even the music I listen to is against #surveillanceCapitalism

@paul “Google and Facebook's new tactic in the tech wars” (all the way back from 2012) makes for good background. Thanks for sharing.
WTF @eff??
Your role is to defend and protect privacy, not to promote the #SurveillanceCapitalism overlord Google!!

@grumpy_developer Indeed. #SurveillanceCapitalism runs on Linux.
From Linux Magazine, Feb 2019
“A VC offers you a contract: he gives you money to accelerate a proven business model … we understood that we weren’t really a startup. We don’t really share any of their characterizing traits. In fact, we are more likely a “stay-up”, to steal a term from Aral Balkan, i.e. a sustainable business with no exit deadline.”

???
Here’s to more stayups in Europe. We don’t have to blindly follow the toxic Silicon Valley model of VC & exits that gave us #SurveillanceCapitalism
