    For the software, Rockbox (at https://www.rockbox.org) should be a good start.

    Alas my many Rockbox players (and recorders!) slowly start dying.

    My favorite Rockbox players are the Iriver H120 and the Ipod Nano 2Gen 8GB. The Iriver because it has analog & digital input/output and can reliably record bit perfectly for days. The iriver's has a easy to replace battery and you can swap the drive for an adaptor. I use a 64GB compact flash one in mine...

    The Nano? Size!
