Ok, I've finally reached the point where I don't have patience to deal with proprietary operating systems anymore. Everything is just so clunky and unresponsive there, despite being housed in hardware that may be a *decade* younger than mine.
- Old hardware implies more patience. Sure, it's probably better supported. However chances are it's much slower in every aspect (including the wifi!) Assimilate this and your computer will become an ally, not a frustration. - Install the #EtchDroid app in your phone and get a USB adapter. Works great when you mess things up and can't boot
After about a week "camping" around using borrowed discarded computers and parts, here's some of my findings so far:
- Your old beater PC most likely can and will be useful again. With the right dose of Linux, that is. - Linux is lighter, but it won't make your PC itself faster. A shitty CPU under Linux is still a shitty CPU. - Your amazing fresh install of Linux reviving the old chap isn't gonna be very useful without your data either. A separate LUKS-encrypted USB with the essentials helps.
Ok fine, this isn't actually my screenshot, but dammit, does this look cool. Sort of winamp visualizations meet star wars HUD design with copious Unixbeardness to top it all off.
I don't have anything against plain htop (or vmstat!) but I mean, wow...
"Your computer isn't that old, you just need a better operating system."
You know, the more I keep using Linux, the truer this saying gets. It's amazing how far you can take even these 2000s machines with just the right mix of software.
Found a drawing pad with pen while #dumpsterdiving a few weeks ago. Testing it out on #GIMP.
The experience is still a little clunky, but that's probably because I'm so used to using it with mouse and keyboard shortcuts. Who knows, maybe I'll start some #mastoart collection in the future!
