The unique problems of measuring air temperature in Iceland. 🤡

    THE FLOOR IS LAVA

"Trausti Jonsson: (1-4) Some weather nerds may have noticed that the temperature today rose above 30°C at the weather station at Fagradalsfjall - it should be noted that this high reading is made in the proximity of the ongoing volcanic eruption and the measuring site is surrounded by lava." https://nitter.net/hungurdiskar/status/1420418309808349190

This is fun. I guess officially these are correct values.

@VictorVenema Scientists are practised at making comments look like questions. So as the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy was there I asked:

"Mr. Sheehan, is the White House #OSTP aware that the main Open Source Code repository #GitHub is forced by the US to block several countries, which makes it useless for scientific use?"

Ed Hawkins, University of Exeter, UK:

"Reminder: climate change is making extreme rainfall more intense & more frequent. This will continue until greenhouse gas emissions reach ‘net-zero’. After that, it will not get better, it will just stop getting worse. The earlier we act the less bad the consequences.

    Stay safe."

My colleagues at ASAPbio are looking for a #commenting system to be used on #preprint servers that respects privacy.

They currently use Disqus and would prefer not to have to code it themselves. Do we have something to offer?

    @drb Looks nice. Thanks.

Isn't using Matrix a bit of over-engineering for *public* comments?

@kenrice is another one of my favourite bloggers. He is an astronomer who blogs about climate change at And Then There is Physics.

Astronomy is very similar to climatology: it is also an observational science and they know about radiative (light & infrared) transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and chemistry. But "Somehow" MAGA does not claim astronomy is unscientific.

His latest post is about the idea that cuts in CO2 emissions will have no effect for many decades. https://andthentheresphysics.wordpress.com/2021/07/14/co2-emission-reductions/

At the risk of sounding rather arrogant, I find myself getting more and more frustrated by people justifying their position on the basis of a flawed understanding of the scientific evidence. One th…

Jeff Masters on Twitter: "Death Valley hit 130°F this hour, breaking all-time reliably measured world heat record of 129.9°F set August 16, 2020 at the same site.

To see the obs, choose 24 hours and click Decoded Data from this link: https://hads.ncep.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/hads/interactiveDisplays/displayMetaData.pl?table=dcp&nesdis_id=19021366

Final high may be higher; Saturday even hotter?"

By now you have to ask for the last 2 days of data.

I love the name of the weather station:VISITORS CENTER AT FURNACE CREEK DEATH VALLEY.

    The American sense of understatement.

Interesting, and I think comprehensible, talk by the coordinating lead author of the chapter on desertification, Dr. Alisher Mirzabaev (ZEF, Bonn) about the new IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9U1zqP_c74

Main take away's:1. Land is under growing human pressure.2. Land is part of the solution.3. Land can't do it all.

Metrology [sic, sadly not even my spell checker knows the science of measuring] for Meteorology and Climate (MMC) organizes a webinar on how f-ing hard it is to measure air temperature outside. https://www.meteomet.org/events/waiting-for-mmc-webinar/

The metrologists normally take care we know how long a meter exactly is and measure parameters with 10+ digits.

As a climatologist it is a real pleasure to see them sweat and realize how hard it is to measure the temperature of an isolator (air) exposed to all the elements.

The Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Congress (CMOS 2021) is pleased to offer a free public lecture by Dr. Gavin Schmidt.

Gavin is the Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and one of my favorite scientists talking about climate change. Highly knowledgeable on climate modelling and statistics.

A webinar link will be available at the following web address: https://cmos.ca/site/congress/publiclecture
