It's funny that you mention you don't know any Jews. I don't know how much you know about the history of the Jews in Spain, but Jews have lived in that region since around 300 ADE, and Ladino is essentially a form of proto-Spanish.

Put another way, until 1500, Jews had lived in Spain for 800-1300 years! They're basically all gone now :(

My wife and I are in a bit of a debate on whether or not to hang a mezzuzah on the door of our new apartment in Vancouver.

She's expressed concern that doing so might draw unwanted attention/hate crimes to our home, and it looks like that's exactly what happened at nearby UBC.

Most hate crimes in Canada are against Jews, BC has had the most hate crimes against Jews, and the largest increase in hate crimes against Jews.

I will mention it to the doctor next time I get a checkup, but I don't have many of these symptoms.

What happens when I eat certain high fodmap foods or sugar is they don't digest, they ferment, quite literally, and I will have terrible, constant (every 3-5 minutes at a time) flatulence for days at a time.

This is what I mean by "I can't go out"- not that I'm incapable of going out but my symptoms are so socially unacceptable that it would be unacceptable to go out.

One of the reasons that travel is so hard for me is my dietary needs.

For a person who makes a choice about their diet for ethical or religious reasons, it's not easy.

For me, eating a food or having contamination can mean the difference between me being able to be pain free or not, or being able to go out in public or not.

It means that when I travel to another country, I have to spend a great deal of time and effort around food planning, so much so that it's often too difficult for me.

If anyone is curious...

I'm gluten intolerant- I can't eat wheat or barley.

I'm fodmap sensitive, I can't eat high fodmap foods like mushrooms, cauliflower, eggplant, etc.

And I have fructose malabsorption, which means I can't really eat sugar or fruits in any significant amounts.
