If you see someone on mastodon.social using a cross-poster from Twitter and never actually posting/responding here, please report them. I think that can be reasonably considered spam.
For anyone who is uncomfortable with the multi-column layout of default Mastodon, check out the webapp https://pinafore.social - it's single-column with tabs.
Good morning! Deactivated my personal Twitter account yesterday. And deleted the Mastodon fan page on Facebook, along with the temporary account I had created for it ☺️
@aral@trwnh@KevinMarks Each instance re-verifies locally. You could fake on your public profile, but local view on e.g. my instance would show the correct result.
Mastodon is written in Ruby. The creator of Ruby, @matz is on Mastodon (albeit inactive). Mastodon uses Sidekiq for background processing. The creator of Sidekiq, @mperham is on Mastodon. It's kind of a bizarre feeling.
Please don't demand content warnings from strangers. Content warnings are a sort of social contract between an author and their followers; if you are not happy with how someone chooses to use them, do not follow that person or outright mute them, or mute words.
One of the most alienating experiences on Mastodon I've observed is when someone posts about something they're passionate about or is part of their identity and the first response is "please cw that" from a complete stranger.
Most Mastodon servers are operated by people like you, out of their pocket. Check if your server has a Patreon! It's usually on the "About this instance" link, where the rules are. Support your admins, especially if they're not me!
So... There seems to be a common misconception where people assume all of Mastodon has 180,000 users because mastodon.social says it's home to that number of users.
The real number is closer to 1,5 million. Those 180k are only mastodon.social users and there are like... 3,000 other servers?
